I think it goes without saying that things aren't going so well this year in terms of snowfall. Things are really looking grim, with the Spencer's Creek snowdepth wallowing at 22.5cm - a whole 50cm lower than at this point last season and yep, you guessed it - even lower than the same point in the worst season on record, 2006
2006 looks heavenly compared to this year so far!
The shining light of the season so far has been snowmaking. Holy hell Thredbo and Perisher can pour out an absolute shitload of snow these days. I haven't skied Thredbo yet this year but at Perisher if you didn't look left or right as you skied down you wouldn't realise how crap the snowfall as been. The cover is great in open areas and thanks to the ridiculously cold temps it's been of reasonable quality too.
The problem now that the school holidays are kicking off will be the crowds. There's already been big queues this past week so the next 2 weeks will be a nightmare. Perisher have done very well to get the lifts open that they have, but when you've got all accommodation booked out (bar a few rooms here and there) you just know they need at least 30 lifts running, preferably 49.
Now to the forecast, and there is some hope if you go by Frog's forecast on snowatch.com.au . He's currently predicting a bit of snow from next Monday through Thursday so it may be just in time for the holidays. Weatherzone, although they haven't updated yet today, are also predicting a little bit next week.
Now I may sound a little pessimistic but 2006 is burned permanently into my memory and I can tell you right now this season is reminding me of it big time. Generally very very cold temps but when a front comes through it warms up and drops barely any snow. I'm praying for a 1991 like season turn around, just like I did in 2006. Hell, even a 2001 like turn around will make me happy at this point.
Anyway, if you're heading down for the school holidays all I can stress is bring your patient pants with you because you'll be dealing with queues and crowds no matter where you go.
